Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to become creative and drawn by art. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse so she could continue her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an effective tool for social change. Her mother, too, was conscious of social issues and taught how to express herself through art. Even though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. She then attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received diplomas in English and African American studies. As in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999.
